Don't call me sweetheart

More from last week...
Shirt: Urban Outfitters, Skirt: Target, Shoes: Aldo

Thursday was a simple day - work, home to pack and to sleep before an early Friday morning train ride. I bought the top not long ago at Urban - I love the sweetheart neckline, the sropped length and the cutouts in the back (not pictured). It's summery and slightly retro - look for it paired with high-waisted skirts and the occasional midriff bearing shorts all summer long.

Back to Back

Shirt: Forever 21, Skirt: Zara, Shoes: H&M

This is from earlier this week - figured I should actually get these up since my pictures will be looking a little bit different from now on (if you follow me on twitter you probably know what I'm talking about). I bought this shirt last weekend - I was drawn to the bright colors and Peter Pan collar and when I turned it around and saw the low back with the bow, well, I was sold. Plus it's a nice lightweight loose-fitting top, perfect for the summer months when the heat and humidity and stifling subway stations make you want to wear the bare minimum or hang out in air-conditioned indoor spaces all the time. One of the other interns complimented me on how much color I wear this day. Even though I get weird looks on the subway and sidewalks sometimes, I love wearing color. It brightens my mood and wakes me up in the morning. Sure, I still need my caffeine, but a jolt of vibrant hues is a great supplement.

Pinks and Blues

It's been a while...
Shirt: Urban Outfitters, Skirt: H&M, Sweater: Old Navy

Don't worry - I didn't walk around New York barefoot today. I just didn't want to mess up my newly touched-up toenail polish. The weekend was surprisingly full of activity since I've been making friends in the dorms and enjoying the perks of being 21 in the big city. Yesterday one of my roommates and I headed up 5th avenue on a shopping excursion which yielded this lovely pink skirt from H&M. It's great for twirling and it has pockets, so I was sold.

On the Waterfront

Yesterday was my first day off from my new internship. I'm only working three days a week and have Wednesdays and Fridays off - ideal for sleeping in and exploring the city, as I am inclined to do. Yesterday I got up at 10:30 and went for a (very) short run around the park before coming back to the dorm to shower. I then went to Starbucks and sat in Washington Square Park in the sun while drinking my iced coffee and reading. Later in the afternoon I decided to wander a little bit. After first consulting Google Maps, I struck out to the West until I hit my destination: the river. Sitting out in the sunshine next to the river was ideal. At only a 15-minute walk from my dorm, you can bet I'll be back a lot this summer.

In Rainbows

This past weekend was very relaxed for me. Saturday I did nearly nothing because of some gloomy weather and Sunday I wandered around Soho with my friend Molly who left yesterday to go back to Chicagoland. Sunday's weather, while still a bit on the chilly side, was much better than Saturday's and put me in the mood for lots of color. So I got some color - on my nails.

I was inspired to do this multicolored manicure after seeing a few pictures of similar ones on Tumblr and other blogs I follow. While most of those were in pastels, I decided to use my bright nail polishes to full effect. I also accessorized with my giant flower headband from H&M because it matched my mood. I got a compliment on it from a random guy in the elevator. I also like how the polish pairs with what I wear on my wrist:

Finally my bright watch has equally bright companions!

Second Verse, Same as the First

Shirt: Petite Sophisticate, Skirt: H&M, Shoes: Nine West

Friday was, sadly, my last day at SELF, but now I've started a new internship! I'm located in the same building, just a floor up. Let's just say I'm very Lucky to be there.
My outfit today was actually inspired by something other than the weather or which clothes were clean. Originally I was going to go with a boring white sweater with this skirt, but when I came across this pink shirt I was reminded of the DKNY Spring/Summer 2011 collection that paired pinks with reds to stunning effect. While I may not have had designer apparel, I think it turned out alright. I was worried this morning (when I took the first picture, hence the different lighting) that I'd end up looking like a Valentine. And I kind of do. But hey, since when is that a bad thing?

Hot Child in the City

Shirt and Skirt: Target, Shoes: Sperry

What does one wear on a sweltering hot day in New York City? I was forced to answer that question myself this week when the temperature approached 100 degrees (though I think it might have peaked at 99). Clearly at some point in my decision making process I decided that one dresses like a ballerina on an acid trip - my brain was making some Black Swan allusions in my head, but really only because of the color and the tulle. Normally I wouldn't wear black on such a hot day, but with the top being sleeveless and the breezy material of the skirt, I felt fine about the dark shade.

Blast from the (pre-fall) past

I don't talk about men's clothes much here, mainly because I am not a man and there's not really a man close to me who I buy clothes for (though I do occasionally buy my father sweaters). Nonetheless, I love this GANT Rugger video - I wish all the men in my life would dress like this. I love the '50s instructional video feel plus, I'm partial to the fictional club's locale - my mom and sister both went to college in New Haven so I'm a bit biased.

And can I get one of those New Haven Math Club ringer tees? It reminds me of an old Exeter shirt of my mom's that I have, but the little pi symbol on it makes it call out to my nerdy heart.

Prime Stripe Time

Shirt: Old Navy, Skirt: Zara. Shoes: Target

I wore stripes three out of four days from Friday to Monday. This might be indicative of some sort of problem. It's one I'll be ignoring for now though, since it's summer and thus prime stripe time. Now that it's after Memorial Day, I feel a little more comfortable wearing this skirt around. I don't generally adhere to rules like those that dictate when to wear white and such, but I do get a few weird looks occasionally. Now, though? It's after Memorial Day. Haters to the left.

Ladies who Brunch

Dress: Forever 21, Shirt: Banana Republic, Shoes: Target

For a few days there, everything was stripes - Friday, Sunday, Monday (still to come). I'm a few days behind, but it's nice to have a few days grace. This was Sunday's outfit for brunch with some friends. We headed to Penelope for an hour-plus long wait. It was worth it, though, for Nutella French toast with fruit and a summer rose mimosa. Brunch foods may in fact be my favorite - decadent and hearty, delicious and filling. My goal for the summer is to eat as much brunch as possible, since my meal plan won't help feed me on weekends. Sunday I also headed out to watch the (basketball) game with some people from my floor. Like freshman orientation with alcohol.

Summer Fridays

Shirt: Forever 21, Shorts: cut-off Gap jeans, Scarf: H&M

This is actually what I wore on Friday after work. Getting out early meant time to do anything I wanted. So I changed and walked around the neighborhood a bit. I ended up popping into the NYU bookstore and buying a couple of magazines and a book to read over the summer. Then I sat in the park, reading Martha Stewart Living and watching/listening to all the craziness that goes on in Washington Square.

Let the Sunshine In

Dress: H&M, Shoes: Aerosoles

Can you tell that I love having a giant window? Something goes missing when you lack a window. Maybe it's also being in a new place, but I think having a window is a great impetus to get outside. In the apartment, I could only see a wall, but here I can see cars, buildings, people...things that make me want to take part in city life. Hopefully I'll continue to feel that way as time goes on.

Lightness of Being

Dress: Forever 21, Shoes: Aldo

Bear with me as I rediscover natural light. I had an extraordinarily busy week. I had a paper to write and assignments for work - even though the week was short I was completely overwhelmed. I finally have roommates, so I might have to be sneakier about my photoshoots. Maybe they'll be amused, though.
