Prep wardrobe staples

Shirt: Old Navy, Blazer: Forever 21, Scarf & Belt: H&M, Pants: Petite Sophisticate, Shoes: Nine West

The weather was fairly gross today - all misty and a bit drizzly. April showers bring May flowers, blah blah blah, but I hate rain. Seriously. But at least today I dressed for it. I rarely wear khaki pants. This is due to the fact that I have a fairly severe distaste for them. Sounds strange coming from someone who's such a self-professed prep, but I almost always hate khaki pants. Perhaps because of their relation to their evil brother, the khaki short and their fraternal twin, the pleated khaki short.
I came to have these pants though, because my freshman year of high school, I needed a suit. If there's ever a rule for high school teachers regarding clothing, it's "don't make your students buy a suit." As a 5-foot tall freshman, a suit was not the easiest thing to find (though at least I didn't grow out of it, like many of the boys in my grade). Luckily, the now-defunct Petite Sophisticate carried suits in even my size and I was able to give my presentation on the effect of light intensity on the eating habits of planaria (I can't remember the exact title, but it involved feeding my little jar of planaria raw liver every so often and it was gross. Especially when I accidentally spilled them on my bathroom floor) properly attired.
Though I've perpetrated prep sacrilege by denouncing khakis, I think I redeemed myself by outfitting the rest of my body in prep staples. Navy blazer? Check. Striped shirt? Check! Guess I don't have to worry about the boys in popped collars coming for me today.
A funny story: I think part of my distaste for khakis, especially khaki shorts, comes from an interaction I had with my cousin Avery many years ago. We were on Nantucket, and she was wearing some sort of awful elastic-waisted khaki shorts. And she was belting them. Me: "You don't have to belt them if they have an elastic waist." Her: "My dad told me I should belt anything that has belt loops." Me: Shaking my head silently.

  1. That striped shirt looks awesome on you. Petite power! I'm sooo close to being 5'3, and have trouble finding dresses that fit me.
