Happy Halloween

I'm working on a paper and a presentation (and another paper and an article) today, but Thursday night I had my Halloween. I got all dolled up...

With pieces from my wardrobe I made myself into a creepy doll. My roommate (above) went as Carmen Sandiego (my idea) and her boyfriend went as Waldo, so I had a fun night of watching people tell them that they had found them. I'm a little sad it's Halloween - no more dressing up for a while. Have a Happy Halloween!

Grand Theft Autumn

I can't believe that October is almost over
Sweater: Gap, Dress: Forever 21, Socks: Target, Shoes: Target

I keep talking about quintessential fall days and I truly believe yesterday was one - chilly, a bit breezy, but also sunny and pleasant. The sweater I was wearing is an old one - I think it first belonged to my sister in the 90s, but it has held up over the years, and I love slipping into it because it's soft, warm and a bit oversized - perfect for layering. I was originally going to put on some gray sweater tights to complete the outfit, but as I pulled them on, I realized I liked how they looked when they weren't over my knees yet, so I swapped them for some knee socks. In my search for shoes to wear with the outfit - limited to flats because my feet still hurt from Thursday night's hours in heels - I considered a more staid pair, but realized that the leopard print was the perfect complement to the rest of it.

Have a Happy Halloweekend - I'll be writing a paper (or two) but I hope everyone else is having a great time.

Silver and Cold

In an unpleasant twist of events, the high temperature yesterday was only 47 degrees. So of course it was time to break out some warm clothes
Poncho: H&M, Leggings: Target, Shirt: Old Navy, Booties: ModCloth

My mom sent me these Halloweeny spiderweb print leggings a few weeks ago and when I found out the forecast, I knew it was the perfect time to break them out. Topping it off I chose my giant knit poncho from H&M - perfect for chilly days. It's like wearing a blanket to class, except unlike an actual blanket, it's actually socially acceptable. I think the trick to wearing it is going to be balancing out proportions - no billowy bottoms while wearing the poncho. A sleeker bottom-half (I'm thinking shorter skirts, tights and boots) makes it look less like I've brought my bedding to class. The only thing I wish I had changed about the outfit was that my shirt only had 3/4 length sleeves. My forearms were freezing until I pulled out some armwarmers. I changed out of this last night to get dressed up for a Halloween party - I can't wait to share the pictures.

Bunny Hop

Another windy day, another narrow skirt
Dress: Vintage, Tights: Target, Shoes: Urban Outfitters

I had to throw on some extra layers later to deal with both the wind and nighttime chill, but it gave me the chance to debut my bunny sweater

Sweater: Forever 21, Boots: Urban Outfitters

As someone who has loved bunnies all her life, I was ecstatic to find this adorable sweater at Forever 21 over the summer. I made a beeline for it in the store and my mom agreed that I just had to try it on. I can't wait to pull it out again and again as the weather takes its turn. The wind these past few days has certainly made me feel thankful for all the layers I keep around - yesterday I felt like I was pushing against a wall of air.

Wind in my Face

Today was a windy day. And I don't mean a pleasant breeze with the occasional skirt-lifting gust, I mean full-out, shield-your-eyes-before-the-leaves-stab-you wind. I started out the day in a dress but by the time I had gotten back from my first two classes and had flashed my slip about a dozen times, I knew it was time to change. So I did.
Shirt: North Face, Sweater: H&M, Skirt: Vineyard Vines, Socks: Target, Boots: Target

I changed into a different (non-wool, machine washable) skirt to cook dinner, but after dinner I had to head to a friend's apartment to watch Glee. So I changed again into another outfit to help me withstand the wind and the night.
Jeans: Forever 21, Boots: Nordstrom, Hat: Target

And that's the outfit that I've ended my night in. I'm sitting in front of my computer, safe from the wind in my own apartment. Of course I'll change again soon - some comfy pajamas are calling my name.

Something Wicked This Way Comes

Halloween is at the end of the week (Sunday, boo) so of course I'm super excited. I'm a big fan of Halloween - I love to dress up and I love eating candy - it's the perfect holiday. My roommate and I have been decorating our apartment to get into the Halloween mood, which will strike extra hard on Thursday when we head off to a costume party. I've got my costume all planned and I can't wait to share it.

Indecision

Sweater: Target, Shirt: Gap, Skirt: Forever 21, Boots: Liz Claiborne

It was unseasonably warm today, but the slight chill in the air and gray skies don't bode well for the rest of the week. I went through several different shirt/skirt combinations before settling on this one. It just felt right for today. I love that this sweater keeps me warm and cool at the same time - perfect for days when Mother Nature can't decide what's up. I spent my weekend dressed in purple to cheer on my team (unfortunately to a loss), recovering from Friday, eating delicious food courtesy of one of my friend's parents and of course, doing work. Sometimes I actually enjoy the week more than the weekend though - as much as I love sleeping in and not going to class, there's something refreshing about getting back into a rhythm on Monday morning.

Tightrope Walker

Last night, my roommate's sorority had a party themed "ZMAs" (for Zeta Music Awards). Luckily we knew weeks in advance to have time to come up with our costumes. After wracking my brain for a while, I finally came up with an idea.

I went to the party last night as Janelle Monae, also known as the owner of the most awesome pompadour ever. I used what I had in my closet to copy her look to the best of my ability and figured out how to make my hair into a facsimile of hers. I got a lot of compliments on my costume - definitely a success. Now if only I could have figured out how to dance like her...

Back in Black

Dress: Tucker for Target, Sweater: H&M, Tights: We Love Colors, Boots: Cole Haan

Yesterday was a busy day - class and another party to go to limited my posting options. Of course today, my limiting factors were that I started the day off super sick and thus spent most of my time sleeping and sipping Gatorade to restore my electrolytes. A couple days ago I said that it really felt like fall. Yesterday followed up on that by being an almost quintessential fall day - high 55, sunny, windy. I first went out wearing only my dress with a jacket over it (plus tights and boots) but my walk to and from class let me know that the jacket wasn't cutting it. So during my break between classes I traded out the jacket for a sweater belted over the dress and topped that with my khaki Banana Republic jacket to keep the chills away. Of course, after I got back from my last class of the day, I had to change again, into my costume for the night. Stay tuned for more on that.

The Roaring 20(10)s

I posted a picture of my hair all pinned up yesterday while alluding to an event taking place last night. Well, the event was a friend of mine's sorority's crush party - prohibition era themed. So naturally, I fake bobbed my hair, threw on a fringed dress and pulled out my longest pearls.
With my roommate
I think the best part was that I didn't even have to buy anything for my 20s look - just had to do some digging in my closet and ask for my mom to send the dress from home. I'll be dressing up for another party tomorrow night - more on that later.

Morning Math

Dress: Anthropologie, Jacket: Banana Republic, Boots: Target

I was out late last night (pictures to come later) and so when I woke up this morning I wasn't in the mood to go anywhere - let alone to math class for a midterm. So standing in my closet with my eyes half-open (more like half-closed) I picked out the brightest, cheeriest thing I could. I think it's impossible to wear a dress this bright without the color affecting your mood for the better. Even more of a mood enhancer? The fact that when I went to math, my exam was easy and I left the room feeling confident about my answers.

Outfits are like Onions

Shirt: Old Navy, Dress (underneath): Forever 21, Jacket: Target, Tights: Target, Shoes: Gap, Necklace: H&M

It really felt like fall when I went outside for class today - cool, not cold but with a definite bite in the air. So exciting. It was the perfect day to layer up. So that's what I did with my dress, shirt, jacket. I loved the pops of color that the dress and necklace provided in an otherwise dark outfit. My headscarf and messy bun hid the fact that I hadn't dried my hair yet in a way that I think was acceptable stylish for class. I did have time later to deal with my hair though, for an event tonight which I'll write about later, but here's a preview of what I did to my hair for tonight:
