And the Mome Raths Outgrabe

As I said yesterday, or perhaps early this morning?, I saw Alice in Wonderland on Friday night. If you haven't seen it, I'm warning you now, there are SPOILERS in this post which is why I put my thoughts after the jump.

I wasn't sure what to expect when I saw Alice In Wonderland. They made a lot of changes to the Alice we know and love from the Disney animated movie. One thing I liked was the change in Alice's age. It was lovely to see a teenage Alice who was strong and curious and not afraid to be a little bit different. The movie was a great female empowerment film - all the strongest characters are female, which is nice to see. One change they made that I didn't like was that Wonderland wasn't really all the wonderful. I wanted to see the bright colors and the whimsical landscape that is so prevalent in the animated movie. However, since the new film centers around what has happened after the red queen took over, it's not as bright and wondrous as I would have liked. The kingdoms of each queen are truly magical however, which somewhat makes up for it. Perhaps I would have liked the background more if they hadn't had the flashback scenes with Alice as a young irl in that bright and beautiful wonderland we're used to. The flashbacks made me want to see a true remake of the animated Alice in Wonderland. That said, all the costumes were magnificent.I loved all of Alice's outfits. As you can see in the picture, she still has a wonderful blue dress, and those sheer fingerless gloves? I want about ten pairs of them.Due to Alice's ever-changing size, they outfitted her many times, which I greatly enjoyed. From her red dress in the Queen of Hearts' castle to the long ice blue jacket and pants she sports in the White Queen's castle, it was all spectacular. Anne Hathaway's White Queen was also especially striking with her white skin and white hair and white dress but dark dark lips and eyebrows. I thought the acting was exceptional as well. Helena Bonham Carter really outdid herself and was the standout performance but I also loved Mia Wasikowska's understated Alice. The last big problem I had was with the Mad Hatter's dance near the end. What was that? It was so completely unnecessary that it made it hard for me to watch. All in all, I had an enjoyable time watching this movie. I'll probably buy it when it comes out, but I'd choose the animated version any day of the week.

  1. I loved alice in wonderland! (or underland?) Just to say, I read the book based on the movie, and it helped me understand the futterwacken dance more. But the outfits were absolutely outstanding. If only I could have them all!! The book is sold at barnes and noble, and is purple with alice looking at the gate with flowers on the cover.
